The third-largest airport in Greece opened in 1930 and has been handling near to 7 million passengers per year at its peak. Its route of Athens-Thessaloniki is currently the 10th busiest in Europe.

Operating as a hub for Ryanair, Olympic Air, Aegean Airlines, and Elinair, the airport operates a large number of seasonal flights as well as year-round domestic and European flights. Outside of Greece, the largest number of passengers fly in from Germany with approximately 1.5millions visitors per year.

There is currently one terminal and two runways yet due to the expected increase in demand, a second terminal is under construction.
