Where to Stay for the Best Beaches in Mallorca

22nd July, 2022, in Travel Advice & Guides

Mallorca is one of the most popular destinations for tourists from all over the world. People flock to the island to enjoy the sandy beaches, bustling nightlife and cultural attractions.

With a huge 262 beaches spanning a 50 km radius, Mallorca has plenty of crystal-clear waters, secretive coves and sunbathing havens to offer.

Many say the eastern side of the island offers the very best beaches. This is mainly due to the seven beaches in the resort of Cala d’Or that are seen as picture perfect, due to their turquoise seas and golden sands.

The best beaches in Mallorca

The best beaches in Mallorca may be predominantly on the eastern side but there are a whole host of others to feast your eyes on.  Some ideal for families, others, like secret hideaways where you can bask in the knowledge it is just you and a handful of others enjoying the lapping of the waves.

1.      Portals Vells

This family friendly beach is full of caves to discover and plenty of blue water to bask in. If you drive to this beach, you will find parking is limited.

Located on the southwest of the island, it is very close to the hedonistic Magaluf, but you wouldn’t think it with its calm environment and forest of pine trees that back the beach up.

You cannot take part in any water sports at this beach, but you can enjoy snorkelling and diving. A large restaurant provides visitors with great local food, too.

2.     Cala Santanyi

A sloping beach that is furnished with colour and nature, this beach is in the southeast of Mallorca and is overlooked by hotels and villas. It is extremely popular in the summer where holidaymakers can relax on the white sand, or venture into the blue water via the kayaks or paddle boats available.

130 metres long, it is a blue flag beach and that attracts locals as well as tourists. Stunning rocks adorn it, and restaurants mean that you can take a break from your time near the water before heading back out again.

3.     Playa de Camp de Mar

If you are looking for a more sophisticated or luxury area to stay in Mallorca, Camp de Mar is an area well worth considering. A hilly backdrop provides a stunning scene whilst the footbridge connects the beach to a tiny islet. Here, you will find the La Illeta restaurant that serves an array of food in a gorgeous setting.

The beach is 150 metres long has plenty of shallow waters for children. Once you have sunned yourself and dined well, you can also head to the small street that offers a variety of shops.

4.     Cala Millor

Heading to the east of the island, one of the main attractions is Cala Millor. Backed with a promenade for picturesque walks, shopping and rest stops for food and drink, it is the ideal beach for a relaxed family holiday. You can partake in plenty of water sports and as the beach is purpose built, the water is both safe and shallow enough for children. Part of this coastal area has also been chosen as a nature reserve. Day trips to explore the hidden coves and caves adds to the air of mystery and for those looking to travel back in time, bronze age settlements are available to visit.

5.     Cala Varques

If you are looking for a hideaway where you can mix nature with naturists, this could be the beach for you. The area is not easy to find, but once you have arrived, you may not want to leave. On the east coast like many of the best beaches, you will need to park on a lane and pass through a gate. Walk 15 minutes through pines and you’ll arrive at a stunning cove. An air of tranquillity will come over you as you find this little piece of paradise. Guides tell us you may meet naturists here, and sometimes the occasional bull! If you are happy to share a beach with them, then this beautiful area is not to be missed. It is recommended to bring your own food or drink as there are no restaurants or bars surrounding the beach. However, vendors will sometimes frequent the area to sell food, drink and souvenirs.
