Is There More to Pisa Than the Leaning Tower?

Pisa is a city located in Italy’s Tuscany region and is, of course, best known for the iconic Leaning Tower. Over five million tourists flock to the landmark every year. Already tilting when it was completed in 1372, the 56m white-marble cylinder has become a world-renowned landmark.

However, there’s so much more to Pisa than the freestanding bell tower. If you’re visiting Pisa rather than rushing through allow yourself some extra time to explore the other delights of the city.

Here are just a few of the best things to see and do in Pisa.

City Walls

They recently opened up the city walls to tourists and it’s quickly become one of the most must-see attractions in Pisa.

You can discover 2km of the city’s walls for free and admire the spectacular views of the city.

Piazza delle Vettovagile

If you want to get to be at the centre of the city’s nightlife then Piazza delle Vettovagile is the place to be. This is one of the oldest squares of Pisa and its name literally translates to supply square.

The square is formed by a succession of arcades which are filled with numerous shops, bars restaurants and cafes.

It also hosts Vettovagile market where you can purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and an array of other goodies.

Botanic Gardens

Little do people know but the oldest botanic gardens in Italy are located in Pisa and they’re not far from the famous tower. The garden which is looked after by the University of Pisa is home to some rare species of plant and flowers from all over the world.

It spans three hectares and is also where the Botanical Museum is located. Here you can admire 17th Century portraits of famous botanists and more.

Palazzo Agostini

This is arguably the most beautiful palace in Pisa. The palace has been superbly preserved since its construction in the 14th century and its red brick façade is the reason it is considered one the most fantastic palaces in the city.

It houses Caffe dell’Ussero, a café founded in 1794, which is famed for being popular among the Italian patriots and intellectuals.

Cattedrale di Pisa

This medieval Roman Catholic cathedral is a grand example of Romanesque architecture. It has a marble exterior and is laden in rich decorations making it a masterpiece.

It’s definitely one of the most impressive churches in Tuscany and the fact that the Leaning Tower stands directly behind makes it all the more wonderful.

Santa Maria della Spina

This church may be small but it has quite an impact. It’s located right on the river Arno opposite the National Museum of Pisa.

The church showcases classic Gothic style architecture with rose windows and pointed pediments.

Don’t miss it if you’re walking along the Lungomare, as one of the most pretty churches in Pisa, it’s worth a visit.
